We all know that in the smartwatch market, Apple is ahead when it comes to sensors and measurements. They were the first to launch into this business and that effort continues to be felt over the years. Now there is research that says it can do more than we thought.

The Apple Watch is a very capable device, so much so that no other smartwatch can do as many things as it. In addition, Apple annually updates the wearable with new health tracking features, and we expect major additions this year as well.

But new research has discovered something that was not known: the Apple Watch can be used to detect the symptoms of a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Let’s explain it.

The condition of a myocardial infarction occurs when certain muscles of the heart do not receive enough oxygen due to a blockage in blood flow. It had been seen before that an AI could take this data from the Apple Watch and interpret it.

Well, according to new research published by the Texas Heart Institute Journal, the Apple Watch can be used to help diagnose heart attack symptoms using the ECG function in various models: Apple Watch Series 4 to Series 7.

The results of myocardial infarction depend on when treatment is started. Since time plays a crucial role, the Apple Watch can provide a reliable analysis of heart attack risk when symptoms start to appear.

In short, it will allow users to seek medical help well in advance of an emergency to receive necessary treatment, the study suggests. Currently, medical researchers detect myocardial infarction using the conventional 12-lead ECG. It requires specific tools and equipment, in addition to the professional training of personnel.

On Apple Watch, there are positive electrodes on the back of the wearable and a negative electrode on the crown that allows the device to measure a single-lead ECG. Although the Apple Watch is capable of providing a new screening tool, it cannot replace medical equipment used in hospitals.

The research also states that multiple studies have shown that the Apple Watch is quite a promising device for detecting myocardial infarction with accurate multi-lead ECG signals.
